The 1800ha Cape Vulture Conservancy is dedicated to having a positive impact on the local environment as well as on the local communities that are located on its periphery. Besides being home to Cape Vulture Lodge, the conservancy is home to a pioneering Education Centre, a resident anti-poaching unit tasked with protecting wild fauna and flora and a thriving permaculture garden that's supplying both the lodge and local people with fresh produce. Add to this the ongoing conservation work being done to help protect and monitor our colony of 728 breeding pairs of endangered Cape vultures, and you begin to understand our ethos of making a difference to both people and planet. It's this commitment that underpins everything we do.
Teaching local children the value of their environment and the plants and animals that they share it with is our core philosophy. We are also active in furthering adult education through outreach programmes and ongoing training and development initiatives.
The Cape Vulture Conservancy Education Centre is a pioneer it this respect and is fast becoming one of the most important education hubs in the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere reserve.
As our name implies, supporting the conservation of the endangered Cape vulture is of critical importance to us at Cape Vulture Conservancy. We have 728 breeding pairs of this beautiful raptor nesting in the cliffs above us and we work actively with leading conservation NGO Vulpro to help monitor and protect them. Vulture viewing on the conservancy is one of the leading activities offered at Cape Vulture Lodge and dispelling the negative reputations of these birds in our communities is of key importance in helping to protect them and the ecosystem that they are part of..
Permaculture is an approach to land management and settlement that imitates flourishing natural ecosystems to grow food in a self-sufficient and sustainable way. It draws inspiration from nature to develop a synergistic way of farming that's based on crop diversity, resilience and natural productivity. Our permaculture farm is designed to provide us and members of the community with fresh produce grown organically and sustainably on site. It is also helping to educate members of our local communities how to farm in a sustainable and eco-friendly way.
Becoming a valued participant in our local communities goes to the heart of what Cape Vulture Conservancy stands for. As a result, we regularly host and sponsor community events such as soccer tournaments which help to foster relationships with the local people around us. Combined with our ethos of education, our outreach initiatives are helping to establish our conservancy as an important agent of change and sustainable development.
